10 Quick Tips for Residential Fire Safety 1) Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, and outside of each sleeping area. 2) Test smoke detectors monthly. Replace the batteries bi-annually. The easiest way to do this is during daylight savings time. Remember; " When you Change your Clock, Change your Battery" 3) Never leave cooking unattended. Pots left on the stove for as little as three minutes have caused thousands of deadly fires nationwide. 4) Turn Pot Handles Inward towards the back of the stove. This prevents curious young children from reaching up and grabbing the handle, pulling it down on themselves, and being scalded. 5) "Candle With Care!" When using decorative or aromatic candles, make sure they are not too close to combustible items. 6) Keep Matches and Lighters away from children. If you are a smoker, leave smoking materials outside or in a high cabinet. Teach children that Matches and Lighters are "Tools, Not Toys". ** Try not to use the words "Don't" and '"Play" in the same sentence. This only entices children. ( "Don't Play with matches" is less effective than teaching children that "Matches and Lighters are tools for Adults, Not Toys" ) 7) Create and practice a Home Escape Plan. Remember, "EDITH" : Exit Drills In The Home. 8) As a part of your Home Escape Plan, Have 2 Exits from Every room in your Home 9) Stay down and crawl low under smoke. Smoke is the number 1 killer in fires. If the room you are trying to escape is blocked by fire, shut the door, remain calm, and stuff a towel or blanket under the doorway. Raise the window and wave an object outside for the fire department to see you. WE WILL COME GET YOU! 10) Have a meeting place outside. This could be a mailbox, tree, or swingset. Let the first arriving firefighters know that every one is out. Also, Call 9-1-1 from a neighbor's house. NEVER go back in....for anything or anyone!!! Knightdale Public Safety's Average Response Time is Less than 4 Minutes Based upon an average of 852 responses in 2006 within the city limits. |
